General Dentistry

Dentistry – dental treatment with different fillings (amalgam, composite and glass ionomer fillings) as well as root canal therapy.

The most durable fillings are made from cast gold or ceramic materials (porcelain) and are produced in a dental laboratory.

Gold is the longest known and used durable material for dental fillings. Gold alloy restoration does not dissolve in saliva, nor does it break. When properly made, such filling may last a lifetime provided that oral health is being taken care of (oral hygiene!).

Gold used in fillings has the same durability as the tooth itself; therefore, it does not cause any malocclusion. It is best used in fillings for molar teeth that are subject to the highest chewing pressure.

The colour of gold may seem unnatural, but usually the filling will not remain visible. On the other hand, a golden tooth may also be aesthetically appealing. Allergic reactions to gold are very rare.

To place a cast gold or ceramic restoration, the old filling and the dental tissue softened by caries is drilled out. The resulting cavity is then shaped to accept the final restoration, and an impression is made. This impression is used by a dental technician at the laboratory to prepare a filling that exactly matches the dental cavity and thereafter it is secured in place by the dentist.

Fillings made from ceramic materials match the exact colour of the tooth and therefore is suitable for use in the visible area of the teeth.
